There
is no doubt about the popularity of Apache among all available
webservers, but there is one webserver with excellent performance which
started to attract very important actor in the market : Lighttpd.
Lighttpd
key features are security, speed, compliance, and flexibility. It have
been optimized for high performance environments, with small memory
footprint compared to other web-servers, effective management of the
cpu-load, and advanced feature set (FastCGI, CGI, Auth, Output-Compression, URL-Rewriting and many more).
It is currently serving many known websites such YouTube, wikipedia
and meebo. I think it's an excellent alternative that need to look
inside it. Maybe more downloads should be available for different
platforms to make adoption more easier, and also help developers to
give it a try and possibly use it on their projects.
Released open source under the revised BSD license.

iJoomla Magazine is an excellent extension that has vastly improved the CMS
experience for publishers using Joomla. The component has undergone a
great deal of development since its first releases, and has been given
a big thumbs-up by critics as well us developers and publishers. PHP Magazine Network contacted Merav Knafo, iJoomla's founder, for an interview about the iJoomla experience.
1- Merav, why do publishers need iJoomla Magazine?
Because Joomla may be great for blogs, but not everyone wants a site
that looks like a blog! When I started with Joomla, I tried to use core
Joomla and was always disappointed with the result. It looked okay but
it just didn't give me the slick look I was after. That's why I've
created iJoomla Magazine. It allows you to make your site appear really
professional and clean.

Each year
Developer.com has its Product of the Year contest. We ask readers to
nominate then vote on the technologies, tools, and programs that they
think are the best in their field. Last year we said that the contest's
results were the most clear-cut we had ever seen. This year's results
were even more clear-cut than ever. In the main category of Technology,
the winner dominated the category with 61% of the votes. Tools such as
Apache Ant, which won Development Utility of the year, and Adobe Flash
Lite 2, which won Wireless/Mobile development tool of the year, both
won by some of the widest margins we've ever seen.
Surprisingly
we had a shift in brand alliance, four repeat winners, and a winner in
the Wireless/Mobile Development Tool or Add-in category that we never
expected.
The finalists and winners
in each category are:
Technology
- Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML)
- JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)
- Ruby on Rails
- Ubuntu 6.10
- Virtualization
And the winner, for
the second year in a row, is Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML).
This is a category that many developers are interested in. Many times
this is what developers would love to try out but never have enough
time to investigate. See Bradley Jones' article announcing the Technology of the Year winner for more details on the technologies within this category.

Certainly everybody know the official mobile edition of Gmail available at m.gmail.com. Recently I was receiving lot of emails from people asking about Pocket Gmail, an open source project based on libgmailer and which have been discontinued after the official release of Gmail for mobile. Pocket Gmail
is still available online on our servers, and I'm keeping the service
available for the main reason that I use it for my personal emails.

After 8 months of development, Drupal released its version 5.0
with over 492 contributors and 1173 patches ! A great community and
certainly a great software. The Drupal 5.0 announced many improvements
in the different level of enduser, website owners, and developers.
Optimized more for current Drupal users :
- Administration pages: completely retooled the administration
page. It now has a default task view with an option to hide
descriptions (think advanced view) and a 'by module' view with links to
configuration options.
- Settings pages: settings are now split up into smaller pages, making it easier to find the options you need.
- Tables: the content, user and comment lists now include a smart
'check all' checkbox and allow range selecting by holding 'shift'.
- Capitalization and typography: attention has been paid to properly and consistently format labels and text across Drupal.
